Highlight the Goddess Within (Day 8/100)

Day 8 - Highlight the goddess within.  Connect with your own spirituality...your core being.  Especially since today is the first day of Lent (a reflective period lasting 40 Days &40 Nights leading up to Easter), use today to connect with yourself & your savior.

Today is Ash Wednesday - I attended the 12:10pm mass at The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the service was beautiful.  I was then called into work because the Sales Office needed some extra help.  I knew that the ashes were going to still be very vivid on my forhead & I was curious what the response would be from my coworkers.  I am was amazed at what the ashes smeared on my forehead in the shape of a cross triggered from people.  One woman, who I had never met, saw me walking down the hall and said aloud to the person she was talking to, "Oh right, today is Ash Wenesday."  One of my friends at work, specifically came up to me & said, "Look at you being a good Catholic."  And what I found to be the most fun was seeing 2 other coworkers with the ashes on their forheads too!

Day 8: I use prayer to connect with God and focus on the power of Lent and now will  use my 100 Reality Challenge as a way to grow even more in my lenten journey.  Lent is my journey with Christ and my Reality Challenge is my personal journey to better myself.

Appreciate Art & Beauty (Day 6/100)

My roommate/dear friend & I walked over to The National Portrait Gallery this afternoon.  It was such a delightful walk and a glorious day.  Even though it was a bit brisk at times, it was still practically perfect.  I very much enjoy the Portrait Gallery because of its vast amount of art and the variety that is showcased.  Plus, it has exhibits that rotate - so really you are able to see new works and yet have the comfort of knowing certain favorites will always be there.

For example, two of my absolute favorites:

The Great Picture By: Albert Bierstadt

Aurora Borealis By: Frederic Edwin Church

Both of these paintings are of landscapes - but appear to encompass so much more.  It is the colors and the way the paintings appear to illuminate from within.  Their beauty radiates of the canvas.  I enjoy being outside and find myself intensely conntected with serene landscapes.  I am often struck by the beauty of mountains, the ocean and the stars.

It is a joy to be able to go to a museum - a free museum - and spend time just "being" around art.  I know now that when I need inspiration for another play or the like, I will walk over to the gallery and just spend hours in the view of these.

Day 6 - I am grateful for museums, this beautiful day, my roommate/dear friend & to live within walking distance of art.

More Than Just A Color

Ladies & Gentleman - you do not want to miss Arena Stage's production of Red by John Logan!  It has been extended through March 11th.  Hurry...

This masterpiece is more than a look into the life of artist Mark Rothko.  It is more than simply a tale of a painter and young boy who admires his work.  The play exemplifies one of the arguments that the character of Rothko makes within the script itself - he argues that his paintings are living and he compares them to children.  These paintings live and breathe.  And as such, the best way to experience John Logan's work is to share in the same air as the actors - to breathe with them and watch them bring to life the words of the play.

The play is not for the those looking for something light, silly and carefree.  This is quite the opposite really.  You will  be pushed to think and rationalize.  I find the direction to be brilliant and I admire the director and actors allowing for moments when the play simply is.  There are moments when the actors are mixing paint or taking in the art on the canvas.  I admire life on stage - the ability to not rush and to just live.  To some, these moments feel slow and without cause.  I could see that it might take you out of the world of the play... maybe the director in me is coming out, but I live for watching actors on stage doing the simple and mundane.

The title suggests words synonymous with other things that are red - one might think of hearts, strawberries, tomato soup, a crayon, parts of the sunset, etc.

The title might seem simple or uncreative.

This play is so much more.

Get Involved. Make a Difference.

Here begins my journey to "Give Back."  I have been feeling disconnected and lacking in charity.  It's one thing to make a donation at church or to help out the homeless on the street (which I am very happy to do), but I have been feeling the need for a deeper connection of giving back.

I believe in the power of hope.  I believe in hte power of theater.  I believe in the power of women.

This is how those three things go togther.  Working at Arena Stage in Washington DC, I am exposed to amazing theater productions.  Currently, we have "Ruined" by Lynn Nottage.  This Pulitzer Prize winning drama, shows the harsh reality of Congo life for women yet balances it with a an arrangement of music and brillant character connections that leave you with a sense of hope.  The organization Women for Women International is sponsoring our production.  I had not been exposed to this organization before and am now hooked on their beautiful mission.

Theater is the perfect medium to reach out to people.  It allows for a conversion between the actors, designers, theater staff and audience members about getting involved and giving back.  It is through this production that I was able to learn more about WFWI and look into getting more involved not only in the DC area but also sponsoring a woman in another country.  The beauty of WFWI is that they not only help women in the Congo, but also in other areas of devestation.  It is time to recognize the great country I live in and all the great things I am blessed to have in my life.  It is time to take what I have and use it to help someone else.

Friends, it is time to Give Back!

NEW JOB

God answered my prayers last week, and I was offered two jobs on Thursday! Can you believe it?!?! I chose the one I felt would give me more opportunities and had better pay and hours. I am happy to say that I am a receptionist for a Dentist Office in DC! Today was Day 3 and I am loving it!

I take the metro to and from and love it. The office is in a beautiful building on the 10th floor and it's by a park and several fun restaurants, coffee shops, a bakery, etc. I also really like the Dental Team I am working with. The other receptionist is super cool and is being very sweet helping me understand everything. I have never worked in a Dentist Office before and there is a lot to take in during the first week.

I am thankful that I only work Mon-Thurs because once I find an awesome DC apartment and get settled, I will then do theater work on the side to build up my resume! It's a brilliant plan! (At least I hope).

I am happy to report that God is good (as always) and I am blessed! I continue to pray for all those still umemployed...God may you find a job for each person's specific talents.
P.S. Don't forget to BRUSH! :)

Let's Get Ready to Rumble...

I am ready to make this my new home...but in order to turn this simple DC picture into a reality I need a JOB! Ok, enough is enough. It's time to pull out the the big guns. I have searched the internet, responded to postings, searched job sites, and am driving myself crazy.

Yet, I am still determined.

As a former professor reminded me in an email - I have to be "relentless"... I can do that.

It's time to put on my big girls pants and march into places and say "hire me." Or, well, at least offer them my resume.

Ideally, I would love to work for:

These are just to name a few of the many wonderful theaters in the Washington DC area. I am very much looking forward to seeing shows and working in the business.

Alright... (deep breath) ... Watch Out DC, Here I come!

Packing Up My Life

As I pack up my apartment, I realize just how much stuff I have accumulated over the years. Everything has a memory...everything. Sadly, it's time for me to grow up and get rid of somethings. This is never an easy task. But, I figure that by getting rid of old stuff, I will be making more space for my amazing future. I like the sound of that!

I am sad to leave. I am leaving friends, family and my "home." I know that change is good and I am ready to 'spice' things up a bit. I pray that God will help me find a great apartment and job in DC so that my awesome friends and family can come and visit me!

Coming Together

Things are coming together...I can see Washington DC in my future!  I move out of my apartment in Newport News VA in two weeks and then move home with my parents in Williamsburg VA for a little bit.  During the month of May, I will be traveling to DC to look for a new place to live and a new place to work.  I do hope I find both relatively soon!  Please pray for me...

DC is going to be great!  It is a beautiful city filled with American History, art, museums, theater, parks, etc...It will be a lot of fun!!!  Plus, I will be close to the National Cathedral.  I am very much looking forward to praying in such a beautiful church!

DC, Theater and Cate Blanchett

I was among the lucky few who was able to get a ticket to "A Streetcar Named Desire" at The Kennedy Center long before it was completely SOLD OUT. I went up last weekend to stay with a close friend of mine and we treated ourselves to a matinee performance. She wanted to see some theater and I, of course, was also up for it! :)

This production was awesome! Tennessee Williams is by far a very talented playwright and visionary. Given his history, I was neither shocked nor surprised by the themes presented in this play. He had a rough life.

And since Mr. Williams is such a popular playwright, I am sure that many of us have soon one or two of Mr. Williams' plays before. So...it is then fair to assume that a person will only see a play a second time if this particular production has a "wow" factor. To be honest, I have already seen "Streetcar," but now I can also say I saw Cate Blanchett play Blanche.

For this production, Ms. Blanchett is the "wow" factor. And she certainly delivered. All the way up in the balcony, I felt captivated by her performance. She truly highlighted the vulnerability of Blanche's character. She pretty much stole the show. This worked out fine given that Blanche is a very "steal-the-show" type of character. Cate knows how to play high class and her sweet Mississippi charm for Blanche was just right. Everyone knows the classic line, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." I was very impressed...but more rather, not surprised by Cate's magnitude. She deserves all the praise she has been getting for this role. It's a role of a lifetime.

But to give credit where credit is due - Joel Edgerton, who played Stanley Kowalski, was brilliant. He had the muscular manly presence that Stanley's character requires and yet offered the subtle charm that helps the audience understand why Stella keeps coming back to him. Joel was not afraid to grab hold of Stanley's animalistic tendencies. I also found that this production had a very tasteful way of portraying the scene between Stanley and Blanche in which Stanley takes advantage of her. Joel deserves praise too because we need to feel threaten by Stanley as well as find moments in the play when we like him, even though the former always takes p residence.

The final character of the "Big 3" of this show is Stella Kowalski. Being Blanche's sister, she is almost expected to be the same "high class" Southern Lady that Blanche portrays. Yet, Stella differs in that she is now being affected by the high strong manner of her husband, Stanley. Robin McLeavy was a gentle yet passionate Stella. It was hard having her up with Blanche, given that Cate took Blanche to so many high levels. However, Robin proved she could handle her own onstage. Her chemistry with Joel was the perfect match for these characters. The most important relationship dynamic is between Stella and Blanche. The audience has to see the love between them. Robin was compassionate, patient, understanding and even took hold of playing "the big sister." Stella is happy in her life with Stanley and when Blanche comes, she not only has to redefine her relationship with Stanley, but also with her sister.

I was very pleased with this production and so was my friend. It was a lovely afternoon of theater!

On Hold...

Currently...and for the past few weeks now...I have been experiencing the long "yellow light" stage of my life.

Yep, I have been put on hold.

I had the notion before the summer started that I would be moving to DC, but as fate would have it...I was just a little ahead of myself. DC is not making itself readily available and therefore...well my options are now limited.

"Are you giving up hope?" You ask.

The answer: NO!

I am just realizing that maybe my dream of moving to DC was just not apart of my plan in life right now. That does not mean I am never moving to DC...it just means that DC has to be put on hold. Bot only for now.

"Our Nation's Capital"

I am thinking about relocating to "Our Nation's Capital"...actually my heart is pretty set on it. The theater lifestyle is better there than where I am currently and besides...it's DC!

The only thing keeping be from moving tomorrow is my lack of job (which I know I am not alone in this search). Finding a theater job/internship now is a little difficult...but I am not giving up!
